Aeration and Overseeding – The Best Thing To Do for Your Lawn

Updated: Jan 13, 2022

Give us a call today if you would like to have a beautiful lawn in the spring. We will be happy to schedule you for aeration and over-seeding.

What is Lawn Aeration?

Aeration is a process that helps rejuvenate your lawn. A machine called a core aerator accomplishes this task. The machine pulls soil plugs, called “cores,” out of the lawn. It deposits these cores that are about 1 ½” long back on the lawn. The holes in the ground allow the lawn to get more air, water, and nutrients into the root zone. This develops healthier and deeper grass root growth. It also helps alleviate thatch problems. Even the cores that are lying on the lawn will help. Water melts these cores and releases the micro-organisms that will naturally combat thatch into the lawn.

What is Over-seeding?

Over-seeding is the process of disbursing grass seed over an established lawn. This new seed will germinate with ample seed to soil contact and even better when it falls into the aeration holes.

What Should You Do After Aerating and Over-seeding?

Water the newly aerated and seeded area thoroughly for the next two weeks, at least 10 minutes per area twice a day. The seed must stay moist to germinate. After the first two weeks, cut back the watering to 3 times a week but for longer times to help drive the roots further down into the soil which helps strengthen the grass.

By the beginning of week three, your newly germinated grass seed should be strong enough to begin mowing again.  In an ideal world, you should avoid walking or playing on a newly seeded area until you have mowed the grass two or three times.
